4 Tips for Creating an Effective Instagram Bio That Attracts Your Dream Clients
In the digital world where most entrepreneurs are running online businesses, your Instagram bio really can make or break your ability to reach your ideal clients. Dramatic? Sure. True? Indeed.
Picture this - someone finds you on Instagram through their explore page or while scrolling through reels and they think “Ooo this reel is totally speaking to me!” They hop on over to your profile to check it out and, naturally, they read your bio. They suddenly go “oh, wait, nevermind I’m not sure this is for me” because your bio doesn’t actually showcase your why or your offerings. They go back to reels and keep on scrolling, never to be seen again. *sigh*
Now, note that a lot of this goes back to also having a more fluid business plan and content strategy / schedule to go along with it (if you need help on that, I’ve got you here), but for this post’s sake let’s say that your content and business are locked the heck in, and it’s your Instagram bio that needs the fixing.
Here’s what I want you to consider:
1. WHO Do You Help?
If you’re an online business owner and your Instagram bio is about you… that’s not going to help you gain potential clients. For example, if you’re an online fitness coach and your Instagram bio’s first line states “32 year old fitness lover raising her 2 golden retrievers by the beach in Maine” I mean SLAY that sounds like a fun as hell life!!! But… that doesn’t really tell anyone what you can do for them, does it?
So the first thing to ask yourself is “who is my target audience? Who am I actually trying to help?” I suggest creating an ideal client avatar that outlines exactly who this person is. And then make this target audience obvious in your Instagram bio so people coming to your page can go “Oh! I belong here! They can help me!”
2. HOW Can You Help Them?
Now, before crafting that first magical line in your Instagram bio get clear on how you help people. Ask yourself “what is my ideal client's biggest problem and what do I do to aid them in getting past that issue?” And then, going further, how does getting past that problem help your ideal client in the long-term?
Fill in the following:
I help (insert your ideal client) ‘do’ (insert specific desired result) so they can (insert desired long term result - basically what does the first result help them achieve)
For example:
I help busy moms get fit on a time crunch so they can keep moving with their kids
Or
I help online business owners go from lost to launched so they can live in alignment with their dreams and live a slower life (sound familiar? Check out my Instagram 😉)
3. Make it Personal (While Still Being Strategic)
Although I may have called some of you out earlier, still having personal flair in your Instagram bio is amazing! You want your potential new followers and future clients to get to know YOU, because you are your brand after all. Of course, you can add some personal flair with the emojis you use, but you can also add a line with someone more personal as well.
There are two routes you can go with this line in your Instagram bio. You can add a personal achievement that makes you desirable to your ideal client and shows them your own personal results. For example:
“1000+ clients served” (to showcase how many people have trusted you)
“Passive 6-figures in 6 months” (to showcase you know what you’re talking about if you’re coaching on selling digital products / making passive income)
But my personal favorite is sharing something that helps your ideal client connect with you. For example:
“Mom to 3 littles & 2 dogs” (if your ideal client is busy moms like I used in the example above)
“Most likely doing yoga or making sourdough” (if your ideal client is folks looking to create a slower softer life)
“2 years, 27 countries” (if your ideal client is folks who want the freedom to travel more)
4. What Is The Call to Action?
Lastly, your Instagram bio should have a call to action as the last line so that when someone stumbles upon your page, and connects with the statement in your bio, they know where to go and what to do next. Your call to action should funnel people to take whatever the ideal action is for your unique business and marketing funnels - whether funneling them to download a freebie, buy a digital product, book a 1:1 call, join your membership or anything in between.
Examples of this include:
DM me “XYZ” to get started (this requires utilizing ManyChat to create an automated DM funnel - I HIGHLY recommend using this for your business!)
Work with me ⬇️ (a little ‘blah’, but effective if you want folks to click on your link in bio to just explore all the ways they can work with you)
Other iterations of this could look like: “Let’s create some magic” “Get started” “Book a call” “Let’s do this”)
